New format and new venue for L’Estartit Jazz Festival 2018
The Estartit Jazz Festival reaches its fifth edition with a new four-day format and a new venue in front of the Medes Islands. From July 19 to 22, the festival will turn the seaside town into the capital of jazz with top acts from home and abroad. The organisers this week unveiled this summer’s programme to the press: “The success of the Estartit Jazz Festival lies in the fact that it is different from eclectic festivals, with an offer that is just jazz.”
As for the programme, the organisers say the festival kicks off on July 19 with the vibrant swing sextet, O Sister! and the trio of US guitarist Julian Lage. The next day sees the jazz tribute by the Bruce Barth Trio to legendary rock band the Grateful Dead, while Brazilian Stefano Bollani debuts his latest work.
Saturday night begins with Suite salada, who won the Enderrock prize in 2018 for the best jazz album, followed by performances of songs from the Mare Nostrum II album by Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano and Jan Lundgren. The festival comes to a close on Sunday 22 with The Street of New Orleans & Mark Braud, pianist and singer Jonah Smith with guitarist David Soler, and Cuban saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, who is celebrating his 70th birthday with an international tour with the trio of pianist Pepe Rivero.
