Martin Schulz takes on Angela Merkel

With opinion polls predicting poor results for the German Socialists (SDP) in the September elections, the party’s candidate for chancellor, Martin Schulz, yesterday abandoned his usual tempered tone and hit out hard at Angela Merkel. Among other things, he said the CDU leader was “a danger for democracy.” The more centrist candidate also had the backing of more left leaning party figures in Franz Muentefering and former chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

It had been expected that Schultz as a candidate would have a greater impact on German voters but in three recent regional elections this has proved to be far from true. His programme now centres on tax reforms and employment.
