Aena calls meeting aimed at resolving Eulen strike

State airport operator Aena has called a new meeting for this morning with representatives of the Eulen company, which provides security at Barcelona Airport, and the strike committee of disgruntled security staff, after the failure to reach agreement in a meeting held by the Catalan government on Friday. In a statement yesterday, Aena called on both parties to help avoid further inconvenience to passengers, after queuing at airport security checkpoints last week led to delays of up to two hours and caused many passengers to miss flights.

Aena said yesterday that progress had been made in Friday’s meeting and that the only issue preventing complete agreement was the wage demands of the workers. Eulen considers “the demand for an immediate wage increase of 31% to be inadmissible and disproportionate,” although the company stressed the “broad consensus” in the demands by employees for social and organisational improvements.

Yet, sources among the strikers deny that it is only the financial issue that is delaying a resolution to the conflict. According to their version, the main progress made on Friday was in questions relating to the training of security workers. “And it is not an agreement; they are obliged by law to do it,” said the sources.
