Refugees left to fend for themselves

This summer has seen a drastic drop in the number of arrivals of refugees in Italy. Finally, the Italian authorities have accepted that the EU is either unwilling or unable to force its member countries to assist in the plight of the refugees arriving from North Africa and has given in to pressure to turn them back. As well, Italy now funds the Lybian coastguard which intercepts the boats and imprisons that asylum seekers in inhumane conditions. At the same time, Rome is cracking down hard on the few remaining NGOs which ignore the country’s closed-port policy. Claims of violence, indiscriminate shootings and sexual abuse are common among many who manage to escape the Lybian prisons.
