BCN Municipal Band begins new season

The Barcelona Municipal Band begins its new season today at L’Auditori, under the direction of house conductor, Salvador Brotons, with a performance of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, on the 80th anniversary of the US composer’s death. Josep Colom will play solo piano. “Gershwin has one foot in classical music and the other in symphonic jazz, because he is a composer who does not improvise, and in the case of his Rhapsody it is a fun, brilliant and stimulating piece he composed when he was little over 20,” says the pianist.

The Municipal Band will also perform a selection of Gershwin’s work from the opera, Porgy and Bess, as well as Sergei Rachmaninoff’s last completed work, Symphonic Dances. An hour before the opening concert begins, La prèvia, which is a free activity for ticket holders, will see music researcher and writer, Pepe Reche, present the repertoire.
