Corsica takes note
“Salutemu to nascita Republica di Catalogna!” With this Tweet in the Corsican language, the president of the Regional Assembly of Corsica, Jean-Guy Talamoni, was one of the first foreign leaders to celebrate the proclamation of the Catalan Republic on October 27. Given the support of French President Emmanuel Macron for the government of Mariano Rajoy, Corsican nationalists have emerged as one of the main allies and admirers of the Catalan “process” in France.
According to Gilles Simeoni, the declaration of independence of Catalonia is a “strong political and symbolic act.” Talamoni and Simeoni lead differing independence parties which aligned to form a autonomist and separatist coalition in 2015 which now governs the island for the first time in its history.
