Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo id nº126

Argentina’s Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo have found the 126th child stolen during the military dictatorship that ruled the South American country between 1976 and 1983. The president of the association, Estela de Carlotto, says they have confirmed a 40-year old lawyer Adriana Garnier Ortolani, is the the daughter of two members of the Montoneros movement who disappeared during the dictatorship. Garnier herself doubted her background and contacted the association.

Garnier now knows that her mother was eight months pregnant when she was kidnapped by the military in La Plata, in December 1976 and that her father continued to search for them both until he was also taken by the military in February 1977. She has since been united with her 86-year old biological grandmother.

The last child identified was found in October and asked for his name not to be released. All that is known is that he was the son of Peronist supporter who was kidnapped in 1977.

The association was formed to try to find between 500 and 800 children who were taken from their families and given up in adoption. The Grandmothers have been involved in a race against time in their objective to unite those kidnapped with their grandparents before they die.
