Growing tension in protests in Tunisia

A total of 565 people have been arrested throughout Tunisia in violent protests against government austerity measures and tension caused by economic policies, cuts and increased taxes is growing.

The demonstrations began on Monday in at least 12 cities, included the capital, Tunis, and the resorts of Sousse, Hammamet and Sidi Bou Said. At Tebourba, 40 km west of the capital, a 55 year-old protester died when he was hit by a patrol car, which has further inflamed tempers. The new policies are the result of the conditions imposed to reduce social spending, lay off public service employees and raise taxes by the International Monetary Fund in exchange for a loan of €2.3 billion over the next four years.
