Disqualified from office without trial

Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría announced yesterday that the government would make an urgent appeal to the Constitution Tribunal (TC) to declare any nomination of Carles Puigdemont as president of the Generalitat to be invalid based on his legal situation, due to the impossibility of his being able to carry out his duties if elected. The TC may decide to accept the appeal without handing down a ruling for up to five months while temporarily prohibiting the appointment, in practical terms a de facto disqualification of Puigdemont from holding office. Sáenz de Santamaría also warned the Speaker, Roger Torrent, that to ignore a court order would amount to disobedience.
