Italian president begins talks to form government

Italian President Sergio Mattarella launched a first round of formal consultations on Wednesday aimed at creating a coalition government after a March national election resulted in a stalemate. It may take weeks to find a solution. A source in Mattarella’s office said the president was not expecting a new government before July and if no deal was possible, a new election would be inevitable.
