Rajoy: Torra’s speech is “confrontational”

After promising that he would judge Quim Torra “by his actions,” the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, took a stronger line in his assessment of the speech made by the candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat. “I will not give any opinion on the candidate, I’ll just say one thing: what we saw and heard we do not like, at least many of us,” Rajoy confessed, but did add : “we will judge him by his actions if in the end is elected.”

The problem is that Rajoy made his statement in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) while Torra had not yet finished the speech and while he still did not know the contents, despite which, the government classed the speech as “confrontational” and warned that any illegality would be corrected by Madrid.

Rajoy’s desire to see a president invested and 155 withdrawn so that he can claim the support for the budget from the PNB stumbled on Torra’s aim of moving ahead with the republic and accepting Carles Puigdemont as the “legitimate” president, was far distant from Rajoy’s desire to see a “return to normality”.

The PP also published a statement saying that it will be “vigilant of the actions of the candidate and his government. Any illegality will be corrected and any violation of our constitutional framework will be answered.”
