Navarra government appeals sentence

The government of Navarra yesterday registered an appeal requesting the revocation of the sentence in the case involving the so-called “Manada” and demand that the five men involved are accused of continuous pack rape, sexual assault, crimes against privacy, robbery and intimidation. The appeal is in response to the sentence of the original case which rebutted a number of elements of the accusation. The case involving five men raping an 18-year-old woman caused widespread public outrage.

Ten single-use plastic products and fishing gear account for 70% of the marine litter in Europe. Across the world, plastics make up 85% of marine litter. The EU yesterday introduced measures to ban or significantly reduce the main culprits which include plastic cotton buds, cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers and sticks for balloons, which will all have to be made exclusively from more sustainable materials. The Commission wants the regulations to be in place before the 2019 elections.

France will give residence papers to an illegal immigrant from Mali who scaled the facade of a Paris apartment block to save a boy who was about to fall from a fourth-floor balcony, President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday. Mamoudou Gassama, 22, was filmed risking his life on Sunday as he climbed up the balconies to rescue the four-year-old who was clinging to a railing, while horrified onlookers observed the ordeal. Macron said he would begin the naturalisation process for Gassama.
