Mutual support for mental health

The Sant Pau Hospital has set up a mutual assistance programme for people admitted to the acute psychiatry unit and people with mental disorders that have been through the same experience. The programme was made public yesterday, coinciding with the World Day of Mental Health, and consists in forming self-help groups among patients admitted to the hospital’s psychiatry unit and people who now cope with mental disorder outside the hospital environment. The purpose of the meetings is to share “emotions, hope and confidence in recovery” and at the same time help to overcome the stigma of mental illness. Participants have so far reported a positive change in their attitude towards their disorders.
