Barça hero comes home

Former Barça midfield legend Xavi Hernández took over as head coach, while Black Friday marked the start of the Christmas shopping season on the 25th

November

1. FC Barcelona footballing icon Xavi Hernández returned to the club he left in 2015 to become the first team’s new coach following the sacking of another former player, Ronald Koeman. Xavi’s first match in charge was a narrow 1-0 win over city rivals Espanyol, with the new coach vowing: “We’ll improve with time.”
2. This year’s Black Friday generally lived up to the expectations of retailers despite supply problems with some products coming from Asia and an increase in the number of Covid infections. Black Friday first made its appearance in Spain in 2013 and since then has established itself as the starter for the Christmas shopping season.
3. Following early heavy snowfalls in the Pyrenees, most Catalan ski resorts took the opportunity to launch the ski season on the last weekend of November. Last year, the coronavirus restrictions meant that the slopes had to remain closed, and this year the objective is to recover the record number of visitors in 2019.
4. As the number of infections began to rise again, protests against anti-coronavirus measures took place across Europe (pictured is a protest in Brussels). At the same time, the Catalan government applied to the high court for permission to extend the Covid passport to enter bars and restaurants, care homes and gyms.

Climate crisis in the spotlight

With the COP26 climate summit under way, November’s issue focused on the environment, reviewing the Greenpeace organisation on their 40th anniversary and featuring two interviews with a climate professor and an environmental activist.
