The city of eternal spring
M. Àngels Carrión is from Barcelona. She has a PhD in psychology and is currently the President of the Association of Experts in Applied Psychology (AEPA).
Why did you leave Catalonia?
For work. I have a doctorate in psychology and I'm a researcher and specialist in occupational health and health organizations. In 2012 I was offered a position to lead a challenging project in Tabasco, Mexico, and later on in Guadalajara.
Why did you choose Guadalajara?
It is a city I had visited for conferences and company consultancies over 14 years and there I have wonderful friends and there are lovely surroundings.
How long have you lived there?
For three years now.
Are you happy with the job opportunities you found there?
Yes, very happy with all the opportunities I was offered and my work is recognised by universities, companies and the government.
What do you think is the best thing about living in Guadalajara?
It is a city of eternal spring, with a wide range of cultural opportunities, historical sites to visit and it is surrounded by spectacular places like Lake Chapala.
What is on your list of “must-dos” for a brief visit for the first time?
The typical “La Gorda” breakfast and a walk from the cathedral to the Hospicio Cabanas, with a visit to San Juan de Dios market. Then a trip to San Pedro de Tlaquepaque and lunch in the Parian restaurant, or even better, Casa Luna, which has a spectacular setting and very good food. At night, to wander around Chapultepec and soak up the atmosphere
And if visitors have more time or make a return visit?
I'd recommend visiting Tonalà crafts. Also, the historic centre of Zapopan with its Basilica and the Wichol art museum. Another good idea is the Chapalita area, and a trip to Tequila and Guachimontones (Teuchitlán's archaeological zone). Or to make a visit to Lake Chapala and its riverside villages (Chapala, Ajijic, Jojotepec). A little further away, if you want to stay overnight, there is Guanajuato, San Miguel Allende, Puerto Vallarta and the Piedrotas in Tapalpa, which is a magical town.
What do you miss most from home?
My son, family and friends. Also, the Mediterranean, Les Rambles and our wonderful bread with tomato and ham.
Do you plan to go back to Catalonia?
Yes, certainly, it is my country and I'd love to go back, but it will all depend on work.
