Contaminated eggs arrive in Spain
Eggs contaminated with fipronil - an insecticide whose use in the food chain is banned in the EU - have arrived in Spain. A batch of 22,000 units of pasteurised liquid egg contaminated with fipronil was detected on Friday in the Basque Country, specifically in Biscay.
The Basque Government’s Department of Health yesterday announced that the batch had been taken out of circulation. According to the same source, the product came from France and was sent to a Biscay company which manufactures products for food distribution chains in Spain. The food controls required by EU legislation meant the contaminated batch could be detected before their use.
Just yesterday the Spanish Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition insisted that no products with fipronil had been distributed to Spain, even after the contaminated batch had been detected in Biscay.
