Independence to be debated in US secondary schools

“Should Spain grant independence to Catalonia?” This is one of the questions up for debate in over 3,000 US secondary schools as part of the “Speech & Debate” section of Civic Studies. Schools taking part in the debating programme are given a choice of questions on social and political issues inside and outside the US. The debates are controlled and monitored under strict guidelines where groups of three students are asked to defend and counter proposals. The debates are popular among students and official debating teams can compete nationally.
