Lleida lights a bonfire made of political art
The Lleida neighbourhood of Cappont yesterday celebrated the Sant Joan festival with an original bonfire of artworks condemning political repression in Catalonia. Among the contributing artists were Divina Drudis, Carme Busom, Rafa Borlansa, Jordi Prenafeta, Oriol Arumí, Enric Burgués, Sandoval, Ramon Torralba, Teresa Alsina, Magda Balsells, Anna Escur, Esther Comenge, Mònica Pla, Serrat Pons and Jordi Calvís, with the work of one of them being saved from the flames, as happens with the falles festival in Valencia.
The bonfire was organised with the pro-independence civic organizations, the ANC, Òmnium Cultural and the Comitè de Defensa de la República. Many of the artworks that ended up in flames appealed for the release of Catalan officials being held in prisons in Madrid, while another caricatured King Felipe VI, who has been highly criticised in Catalonia for his stance on the independence issue.
